Grade 8

Stagecraft

Students learn the fundamentals of scenic construction, scenic painting, and prop work. In the first quarter, students earn a shop safety license and learn drafting, measuring, and power-tool construction, culminating in a scale-model set and a Hollywood flat, along with scenic painting techniques, knot tying, and prop documentation. In the second quarter, students apply these skills to a full production cycle: designing, building, painting, loading in, and propping the set for one of the December theatre showcases.

Technical Theatre 1,2: students learn the foundational skills of technical theatre: shop and tool safety, stage architecture and soft goods, costume construction, scenic construction and drafting, scenic painting, props, and lighting and sound fundamentals. Working from scale drawings, students build and paint scenic units, construct a wearable garment from a pattern, document and pull props from stock, and hang, focus, and cable basic lighting and sound systems. This is an introductory course for the Production and Managerial Arts (113) career pathway of the Arts, Media, and Entertainment industry sector.

Grade 10

Tech Theatre 3,4

Technical Theatre 3,4 (P): students learn advanced scenic construction and painting: stationary power tools; door, window, and triangular flats; advanced platforming and legging systems; and layered scenic finishes such as faux masonry and aging treatments. In the first quarter, students design, build, and open a haunted house; in the second, they independently budget, build, load in, run, and strike the winter theatre production, managing drawing packages, material stock, cut lists, and line-item budgets. This is a concentrator course for the Production and Managerial Arts (113) career pathway of the Arts, Media, and Entertainment industry sector.
